The position for a Human Rights Director in Lawrence was
advertised a few weeks ago and while rumors abound, the fact is
that this appointment has been at a stand still.
According to Frank Bonet, Personnel Director for the City of
Lawrence, “we have not been able to begin the selection of
candidates for this position and bring it before the City Council
for their approval because the members of the Human Rights
Commission are the ones doing the selection among the applicants
and they don’t have a quorum,” he explained.
Not having sufficient members on the Human Rights Commission has
been the culprit for the delay but, on Tuesday, February 21, the
Lawrence City Council will be discussing the appointment of two
individuals to serve on the Human Rights Commission. Janice Vargas
and Sandy Guerrier are being recommended by Mayor Michael J.
Sullivan for a three-year term. As soon as the Commission meets,
they will be going through the applications and select the best
candidate for the position and then it will be sent before the
City Council.
“Contrary to anything you hear,” said Mr. Bonet, “no one has been
discouraged from applying or turned down because the Commission
has not reviewed the applicants,” he stated. down because the
Commission has not reviewed the applicants,” he stated.
