The Merrimack Valley YMCA held another recognition program for some local students involved in volunteer activities. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created in 1995 to recognize students in middle and high school grades who have demonstrated exemplary community service. These prestigious awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals are presented annually on the local, state and national level.

The honorees received plaques from the YMCA and the three winners representing each branch of the YMCA also received a $100 US Savings Bond donated by Unified Federal Credit Union at Lawrence General Hospital for the third consecutive year.

State Senator Steven Baddour in representation of Senator Sue Tucker, delivered a proclamation from the Senate. State Representative William Lantigua, also representing his colleagues Barry Finegold and David Torrisi, presented the students with a proclamation from the House of Representatives. The ceremony was held in the Kurtz Auditorium at Lawrence General Hospital among teachers and relatives from Lawrence, Methuen, Andover and North Andover.
