The Community Group Inc., is pleased to announce that Merrimack
River Community Child Care has joined the network of child care
programs it manages under the name Community Day Care.
Merrimack River Community Child Care is located at 50 Island
Street in Lawrence, near Cambridge College and Essex Art Center.
It is operated by dedicated child care professionals, many of whom
have been with the center for over 10 years. Begun as an employer
supported center for Grieco Brothers (later acquired by
Southwick); the center now opens its doors to community families
with a comprehensive and enriched program of full day
toddler/preschool care.
“Merrimack River is a natural fit for our agency,” says Sheila
Balboni, Executive Director of The Community Group. “The mission
of Community Day Care has always been to serve the working
families of Lawrence. Years ago we provided consultation and
support to the center when it was being developed. We have
followed its success and record of fine service over the years and
in our new role, we look forward to providing an array of support
services to the program including: human resources, fund raising
and computer/ tech expertise.”
Plans for the future include program expansion; the center is now
taking applications for preschool aged children. In addition to
its well developed program of early childhood education, Merrimack
River also offers transportation, breakfast and hot lunches.

Community Group’s network of child care centers are among the
earliest developed in the Merrimack Valley. Programs have
emphasized nurturing support and early childhood education. They
were the first in the area to receive national accreditation and
have been recognized for their excellence by being awarded state
funding for over thirty years. The Community Day Care network of
child care programs operates in a variety of locations throughout
the city including Northern Essex Community College, the Beacon
Courts and the Arlington neighborhood’s Wyman Street. The network
