Every year, the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce sponsors a breakfast where all the mayors and town managers of the Merrimack Valley have the chance to brag about their accomplishments and talk about their future plans.

In the midst of jokes, serious situations were presented and an optimistic outlook was forecasted by each official.

Here are some memorable quotes from the mayors and town managers:

Town Manager Reginald Stapczynski, Andover
“The Massachusetts Municipal Association reports that people want to move to Massachusetts because of land availability, tax rates, accessibility to airports and low crime rates.”

Mayor Michael J. Sullivan, Lawrence
“In 2002 I came here asking for your help.  Today, I’m here to thank you.  With your help, we have repaved Rt. 28 and you cannot tell that you are in Lawrence.”
“We have 100 new homes with $828,000 in tax revenue.”

Mayor William Manzi, III, Methuen
“We’ll have one stop shopping with Karen Sawyer Faust in Community Development, making it easy to do business in Methuen.”
“We’ll send a Master Plan to the City Council in 45 days.”

Town Manager Mark H. Rees, North Andover
“Recycling is saving us over $100,000 each year.”
“We are putting all the utilities cables underground in downtown.”

Mayor Thatcher Kezer, Amesbury
“I’m losing the email battle and I’m being kicked out of the ‘Clean Desk Club’.”
“I have succeeded at one thing, handling papers only once – they are in the same place I put them to be looked at later.”

Mayor James J. Fiorentini, Haverhill
“Crime is down with 13% overall.”
“Lowe’s moving to the city this spring.  We removed the requirements (roadblocks) for businesses although parking continues to be a problem.”
“We have a food cluster in the area with 16 restaurants in downtown.  Any thinking about opening a restaurant should come see me.”

Mayor William Martin, Lowell
“Artists are moving from Boston and we have 2,000 units of housing coming up.”
“We have high quality shops downtown.”
“We are ready for the manufacturing and service industry to move in.”

Mayor John Moak, Newburyport
“Manzi stole our candidate for Community Development.  I hope next year Karen can say, ‘I wish I had gone with Newburyport.’”

Town Manager David Cressman, Tewksbury
“The governor’s race is the most important in the last 18 years.”
“More children are staying in public schools instead of going to private or parochial schools.”
