As part of its commitment to community revitalization, Mayor
Michael J. Sullivan and the Office of Community Development (OCD)
announce continuing strategies and funds to rebuild and enhance
the business districts of Broadway and Essex Street. The Office of
Community Development, which administers the Storefront
Improvement Program, a major piece of the city’s business district
revitalization efforts, is funded by the Federal Office of Housing
and Urban Development (HUD).
“We have specifically targeted Essex Street and Broadway to
make an impact on on the downtown community as part of our Essex
Street revitalization program”, states Mayor Michael J. Sullivan.
The Storefront Improvement Program provides grants and technical
assistance up to $18k per approved project, with 75% paid by the
City and 25% paid by the business or property owner. Recipients
can use the funds for a variety of improvements, ranging from
repainting to purchase of new windows, awnings and signage.
The Storefront Improvement Program was established to help new and
existing businesses attract customers. It also:
• Leverages private investment from current owners and inspired
improvements to neighboring buildings
• Enhances the appearance and charm of commercial areas while
building a safer street environment, and
• Re-establishes pride in some of Lawrence’s oldest and best-loved
business districts.
