Ten students of the Lawrence Latino Nursing Workforce Diversity Program were awarded a total of $40,000 in scholarship monies at a breakfast held in their honor on January 12, 2006 at the Lawrence Heritage State Park.

The Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, Inc., a non-profit healthcare organization with 4 Lawrence clinics serving over 40,000 patients from the local area, serves as the sponsoring agency for the Merrimack Valley Area Health Education Center (MVAHEC), the overseer of the program.

Graduates of the Lawrence Latino Nursing Program going on to earn their RN license will provide area hospitals with the resources needed to fill a deep void in current staffing situations. Benefits to area hospitals include alleviating its nursing shortage, providing career opportunities, and diversifying the nursing workforce.

The mission of the MVAHEC is to create programs that foster the development of an atmosphere conducive to the recruiting and retaining of health care workers throughout the Merrimack Valley.

Each scholarship recipient has committed to working in the underserved area of Greater Lawrence for a minimum of two years after graduation.
