State Representative William Lantigua (D-Lawrence) announced that
a scholarship program, established to benefit Latino college
students majoring in math or science, is now accepting
applications.
“I’m very happy to spread the word about the Hispanic Engineer
National Achievement Awards Corporation (HENAAC Scholars Program),
which helps gifted Latino undergraduates with the high costs of
tuition,” Lantigua said. “I hope local students will take
advantage of this opportunity.”
Founded in 1997, the HENAAC Scholars Program awards scholarships
to college students enrolled in engineering, math, computer
science, or material science programs who have maintained an
overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Over the past six
years, HENAAC has distributed over $543,000 in educational grants,
and intends to award $250,000 this year.
In addition to their scholarship, awardees will receive a
complimentary registration package to the 2006 HENAAC Conference,
which will take place October 5-7 in Anaheim, Calif. The package
includes free registration, lodging, travel support, and a
scholarship check, presented to them by their sponsor at the
HENAAC Student Leadership Dinner.
Applications, be accompanied by a 700-word essay, a resume, a
college transcript, and letters of recommendation from both a peer
and a faculty member, must be packaged together and postmarked by
April 21.
Qualifying students are invited to download an application from
www.henaac.org. They may also contact Kathy Borunda Barrera,
manager of the HENAAC Scholars Program, by phone at (323)
262-0997, or by email at
kathy@henaac.org.
“Lawrence has many students deserving of this scholarship,”
Lantigua said, “but they have to apply first. I wish them luck.”
