With Fred Simm toeing the rubber Methuen got ready to meet the North Lawrence Babe Ruth entry in game one of this best of five series. Fred’s son Eric is now the starting Quarterback for the Salem NH Blue Devils for his second straight year.

Fred senior played that position at Methuen High while performing hi three sports at that school. He later played college baseball at Westfield and hit well over 300 in his collegiate career. The Charlie Beaudette coached Methuenites batting order was as follows Simm pitcher, Mike Solomon ss, Mike Ness cf, Gary Ruffen 2b, Hajjar c, Haynes rf, Healy 3b, Jeff Weinhold Ib and Eaton in If.

Lawrence answered with now a Central Catholic Hall of Famer and worker for the local post office Mike Donohue ss, Dave Robinson a 3 sporter later at LHS was the pitcher. Chuck Ead C, Bobby Berndston cf, Sammatero in If, Castillo 2b, Mannion 3b, Rappazzo Ib, and Cavaretta rf. Simm leads of the first inning with a sharp single and goes to second on an error and third on a passed ball. Mike Solomon looks at ball four and steals second. Gary Ruffen lays down a nice bunt and Simm and Solomon both score as the pitcher throws the ball into rf.

In the second Jim Healy reaches on an error and Jeff Weinhold on a fielder’s choice, Freddie Eaton lashes a hard single to cf and and Healey crosses the plate and so does Eaton as Lawrence is throwing the ball around and making costly errors.

Mike Donohue singles to start the third for Lawrence and Chuckie Ead is hit by a Simm pitch, Berndston drives in Donohue and Ead scores on a wild pitch. Donohue opens the fourth with a walk and stole second, Ead hit’s a rope to rf and Mike comes across the plate and it’s 4-3 Methuen. In the Methuen sixth it’s back to back singles by Healy and Weinhold, Eaton sacrifices moving both runners up and Mike Solomon hits Robinson curve ball to right scoring both Healy and Weinhold.

The Lawrence team loaded the bases in the seventh and Simm showed his toughness as he got the hitter to fly out to cf with Mike Ness making a fine catch to end the ballgame with Methuen taking game one of this best of five series.

Game two will be played at the Mark Devlin Field in Lawrence the following night Fred Simms rang up 10 strikeouts on the night and gave up six base on balls in his complete game seven inning performance while allowing 6 hits.

Robinson surrendered only 5 hits but shoddy fielding by his mates proved to be his down fall. Mike Donohue was the only batter on either team to get two hits in the game. The final score was 6-3 Methuen.

Simm now a registered football official had one hit and so did Solomon, Healy, Weinhold and Eaton for Methuen. Lawrence was led by Donohue with 2 hits, Robinson, Berndston, Mannion and Rapazzo each had one.

The Beaudettemen won a hard fought game over Lawrence to open what looks to be a tough series. Charlie of South Lawrence is now retired from Tyer Rubber and a long coaching job with his pal Billy Blood in Methuen baseball. For his loyalty to Methuen sports he was inducted into the high school Hall of Fame. A better than average bowler for many years he can be seen at many athletic events wearing his blue baseball hat with the white “M” for his adopted City.
