The Ladder to Language Program at Cambridge College has been
chosen as one of the few programs that will be celebrated and
recognized as “creative partnerships” at the United Way of
Merrimack Valley’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at
the DiBurro’s Function Facilities of Bradford.
The Ladder to Language Program is an intensive and innovative
three-semester ESOL course that provides six hours of classroom
instruction and two hours of structured, community-oriented,
conversational activity each week during 15-week semester.
The program began as a pilot project in October 2004. The program
is a partnership between Cambridge College, Lawrence
CommunityWorks, Andover Bread Loaf and the United Way volunteers,
with the assistance of the Lawrence LiteracyWorks, a consortium of
adult literacy and English as second language network providers.
Ladder to Language is a program that helps English language
learners to go back to college; get better jobs; change a career
or area of study; adapt to the American culture; and feel
confident in speaking and writing English.
The first level of the program focus on grammar, use of
dictionary, beginning writing skills and the use of resources such
as the News for You and Focus.
The second level is about setting up goals, more grammar, more
writing, study groups and reading their first novel.
The third and last level is about classroom skills, more grammar,
more vocabulary and reaching the goals while ending with a
portfolio of their learning and accomplishments.
Cambridge College thanks the sponsorships that makes this program
possible including United Way of Merrimack Valley, City of
Lawrence and its C.B.D.G. block grants and private donors of the
College.
Sandra Blanes is the Program Coordinator and curriculum developer,
master teacher and Maritza Gonzalez is the administrative
assistant and a former graduate of the program.
