Learn the Fascinating and True Story of How Baseball got its First
Commissioner as part of the NECC White Fund Lecture Series.
Just in time for baseball season - come find out just exactly
How Baseball Got a Commissioner when author Donald Gropman
presents his original research during the White Fund Enlightenment
Series presented by Northern Essex Community College on Sunday,
April 9, at 2 p.m. Free and open to the public, the program will
be held in the White Fund Room located at Northern Essex’s
Lawrence Extension Site, 78-82 Amesbury Street.
His presentation is based on research into the events leading up
to the naming of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis as the first
baseball commissioner in 1921. Gropman will strip away the mythic
version-the official story is that the action was in response to
the 1919 Black Sox scandal - and tell the true story behind it.
Those attending the presentation will discover a real life drama
played out by club owners and executives who were primarily driven
by arrogance, vindictiveness, greed, and revenge.
Gropman is the author of several books, including Say It Ain’t So,
Joe, widely regarded as the definitive biography of Shoeless Joe
Jackson. Originally published by Little, Brown & Co. in 1979, it
remains in print to this day. Gropman’s work has appeared in
numerous periodicals and such prize anthologies as The Best of
Yankee Magazine and The Best American Short Stories. He is
currently at work on a biography of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis.
The White Fund’s purpose is to have a free series of interactive
presentations for Lawrence area adults, youth, and children. The
audience is encouraged to seek wisdom, cultural enrichment and
intellectual enhancement by attending and participating. Funded by
a generous financial gift from the Honorable Daniel Appleton
White, the White Fund Lecture Series has provided cultural
conversation featuring well-known lecturers in fields such as
history, literature, travel, the arts, and politics. The White
Fund is collaborating with Northern Essex on this series.
